Michael McGreehan
A 19-year staff writer for the Bay Area News Group, Mike's assignments generally involved high school sports. Nonetheless, he developed a reputation for his knowledge of worldwide events. This was especially true in soccer, as he covered the 1994 World Cup and a number of other professional games. He also wrote a number of columns on the sport, including a series dedicated to the 2006 World Cup. But Mike's interests extend far beyond soccer. He has covered other national and international events that involve water polo, swimming and youth baseball. Among his credits are a multi-part feature on the influence of Latin American players on the major leagues. The Oakland Babe Ruth League presented Mike with its Journalism Award in 2002 after his write-ups of the Oakland Rattlers, a team of high school players that traveled to Cuba the previous year. Mike's also big into sporting history, such as the old Pacific Coast League that once dominated West Coast baseball before the coming of the Giants and Dodgers in 1958. The Olympics, both winter and summer, are of particular interest to Mike, too. But Mike isn't just about the major sports. Some might argue that the more obscure a sport or subject is, the more Mike is willing to explore it. Those reading Mike's entries might also find that Mike's interests go beyond sports, too.
